Included/not included: Preparing a trip to San Blas, Panama

PREPARING FOR YOUR TRIP

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure! Before we leave, it is important to make sure we have all the necessary items for the next trip.

  • What to pack? The sailboat is a small space with everything you need. It is not recommended to bring suitcases with wheels on board. Pack your luggage in carry-on suitcases or gym bags for better organization. We recommend packing: swimsuits, beach towels, sunscreen, waterproof camera, waterproof protectors for electronic devices, organic mosquito repellent (although there are no mosquitoes on most islands), light sandals, personal care products, books, chargers, prescription medications and motion sickness pills and most importantly, your passport or ID card.

  • Dizziness on board: If you feel dizzy hours before your departure, we recommend taking a pill, one of the most common brands such as Dramamine or Mareol.

  • Cash: There are no ATMs, banks or nearby mini-markets in San Blas. Be sure to exchange cash before you leave. Make any necessary cancellation payments and purchases on site. Your rental may be cancelled if you do not pay upon arrival.

  • Mobile internet signal and connection: The telephone companies Más Móvil and Tigo operate in San Blas. Some ships offer a Starlink connection, the use of which is at the discretion of each captain or owner.

  • Electricity: Sailboats generate energy through solar panels, wind and generators. Using the energy inside a boat is common practice. On a sunny day, it is possible to use the energy openly. At nightfall, depending on the boat, the engine or generator can be turned on for a few minutes to ensure sufficient energy during the night. Make sure you pay attention to your energy consumption on board.

  • Water: Every sailboat has a water generator or drinking water collection. In any case, the sensible use of fresh water on board is essential and part of life on board. There is usually a shower once a day and you should be careful to remove the salt water every time you enter the interior of the sailboat to avoid salinization.

  • Governance on board: Each sailing boat has its captain who has the right to make decisions to ensure the collective safety of his crew. Therefore, any instructions you give that serve your personal and collective safety must be carried out immediately.

  • Introductory safety talk: Upon arrival on board, the crew will provide you with general information about your stay and the correct use of the facilities, in addition to sharing important personal and collective safety information.

Crew:

  • The voyage is not a guided tour, but the crew is prepared to help you make the most of your time on board. Safety is our priority, and your comfort follows closely. Please understand that crew willingness to socialize may vary based on their duties. Each captain operates differently, but is primarily focused on safe navigation. Some vessels have contract captains or rotating captains; ask for specifics, but duties are subject to change. Captains may be local or foreign, but there is always a crew member who speaks English. Learn more about each captain through the biographies provided. Open communication with crew is critical to address concerns and questions, and to create a positive environment for all passengers. Teamwork enhances the overall travel experience.
